The garden of bad and evil

Before we moved down here, I had lofty goals of becoming some sort of master gardener. I'd spend my days, kneeling before empty plant beds, tilling, cultivating, planting, becoming one with the earth. Soon we'd have a lush garden bursting with a rainbow of colors and singing cartoon birds.
As any rational human being could have told me, reality was a bit different. As it turns out, gardening is just not for me. First of all, there are bugs everywhere. Also, even in late September, South Carolina is still in the 90s during the day. The thought of exerting myself outside in the sweltering sun is enough to make me break out in a sweat. I mean, my version of being "outdoorsy" is sipping a frozen margarita on a covered patio.

And yet, about a week ago, I found myself in the midst of a landscaping overhaul. Reluctantly I accompanied Chris and Mom to Home Depot (my least favorite place on earth) for some flowers.
We arrived home and in the hot hot sun we (he) dug out the grass
So far so good
Then we (he) dug some holes
Brutus supervised. He always gets the best jobs.
Then we planted the flowers
Them's some big mums!
Then some other stuff... Okay, I wasn't exactly participating the entire time. Someone had to make the waffles.
My 62 year old mother was out there in the sweltering sun doing hard labor for the entire day. Meanwhile I had to stop and take a breather from the strain of turning on the hose.
My main thought the entire time was "gardening is not enjoyable at all" and "I am not enjoying this." Some hobbies just aren't meant to be. I'll stick to painting unused shelves.
End result: A work in (slow, back-breaking) progress.
